About us

Fish processing

Our fish grow in clean water and controlled conditions, far from sources of pollution.

Freshwater fish farming has a long-standing tradition in Croatia, especially along the rivers Drava, Sava and the Danube. Fish farms date back to the Middle Ages, when carp ponds were a mandatory addition to monasteries.

Large ponds for farming carp were built in early twentieth century (1902-1918) (Poljana, Končanica, Našice, later Jastrebarsko, Crna Mlaka, Pisarovina, Grudnjak, and Razbojište). The ponds were built at those locations because the surrounding ground was very low so the water from the rivers could flow into them.

The history of freshwater fish farming in Orahovica is associated with Salamon Heinrich Gutmann, a successful industrialist and businessman who came to the Valpovo area from Hungary in 1883.

Wanting to expand his industrial empire and Orahovica’s industry, he planted orchards and vineyards, built a textile factory and entrusted his son, Baron Ladislav, with the management of the fish ponds. In 1962, freshwater fish farm “Grudnjak” from the locality Grudnjak was merged with Zdenci i Čačinci farms into a single agricultural and fisheries enterprise organized as a combine, under the name “Zdenci”.
